Volumetric weight: why a puffer's box matters more than its label

Most of LitBuy's DHL, GOFO and Royal Mail tax-free lines divide length × width × height (in cm) by 8000 and bill the greater of actual and volumetric weight (estimator, 27 Oct 2026). A winter jacket has little weight and a lot of air, so volume can decide the price. We estimate a puffer at 1.50 kg and an ordinary jacket at 1.20 kg. All item prices on this page are hypothetical and converted at LitBuy's display rate of ¥1 ≈ €0.158, which sits above common bank rates.

Only the first two boxes stay inside the 2 kg figures we have for Germany: LIT-Economy-DHL-DE listed €45.09 all-in for 2,000 g on 27 October 2026. For the bulky box, 50 × 40 × 15 cm gives 3.75 kg of chargeable weight, 2.5 times the estimated actual, and LitBuy's estimator is where a price for that weight should come from. Size limits apply too: 60 × 50 × 40 cm on LIT-Economy-DHL-DE.

The result of €120.93 would be the same if the puffer were compressed, because 1.50 kg of actual weight already puts it in the 2,000 g band. The squeeze only pays when it keeps volumetric weight under 2 kg. Winter jacket types you will meet in sheets

The rows in the grid above range from short puffers to long parkas and wool coats. Each type carries its own measurement to read before you open the link, and each moves differently between weight bands.

Weights are our estimates from the 27 October 2026 fact sheet; we weighed no jacket. "Row" means one product line in a sheet.

Puffers and parkas are 2,000 g-band items; thinner jackets may fit in 1,000 g only when packed small.

Fill, warmth and the words behind them

Chinese puffer listings quote 含绒量 (down content, often a percentage) and 充绒量 (fill weight in grams). Fill weight is the number to compare between rows of a similar cut: more grams means more insulation. Sellers also name the source, 白鸭绒 (white duck down) or 白鹅绒 (white goose down), and some rows are synthetic or cotton-padded (棉服 is a padded jacket). Treat the percentage as the seller's claim, since LitBuy states it cannot verify quality.

One jacket, two tees: what a shared parcel does

A puffer shipped alone is in the 2,000 g band, and that band has room: the difference between the 1,000 g and 2,000 g tiers is paid whether the parcel holds 1.2 kg or 2.0 kg. Add two ¥60 tees (est. 0.50 kg together) and the parcel reaches 2.00 kg, still the same band as long as the packed box stays under 2 kg chargeable. The total becomes €139.89 for ¥600 of items, against €120.93 for the jacket alone, so the two tees cost €18.96 extra instead of €65.12 as two lone tee parcels. Our tees page has more light rows.

A heavy jacket is the best anchor for a shared parcel, since the band already has space.

QC photos for a heavy jacket

Routine QC is generally 3 to 6 photos, and extra custom photos cost ¥1 each. For a winter jacket, request the zip fully closed, the inside label, the lining, the baffle stitching close up and the hood drawcord. How is volumetric weight worked out for a jacket?

Multiply length × width × height in cm and divide by 8000 for LitBuy's DHL, GOFO and Royal Mail tax-free lines; EMS-type lines use 6000. A jacket folded to 40 × 30 × 12 cm gives 1.80 kg. You pay the greater of that and actual weight, so a bulky box can cost more than a heavy but compact one.

How much does a puffer jacket cost to ship to Germany?

Yes. That line allows boxes up to 60 × 50 × 40 cm (estimator, 27 Oct 2026). A puffer folded to 50 × 40 × 15 cm fits, but its volumetric weight is 3.75 kg. SF-DHL-DE-1 allows 120 × 60 × 60 cm, so check the limits of your chosen line as well as the weight band before you pick a box.

Is fill weight more useful than down content?

Often yes. Fill weight (充绒量) in grams tells you how much insulation is in the jacket, while a percentage (含绒量) only shows the ratio of down to feathers. Compare fill weight between rows of a similar cut and shell. LitBuy states it cannot verify quality, so treat every number as the seller's claim and look for the label in QC photos.

Can LitBuy vacuum-pack my winter jacket?

LitBuy does not publish a vacuum or compression service in the pages we read, so ask support before you rely on it.
